This chapter deals with the ways in which older people exercise their grandparenting. It focuses on the character of relationships that grandmothers and grandfathers sustain with their grandchildren and the factors that mould this. It highlights the differences in grandparental relationships as well as commonalities. In the light of recent shifts in patterns of partnerships and marriage, it also explores the patterns of step-grandparent ties and contrasts these relationships with those sustained by ‘biological’ grandparents.
