This chapter discusses the extent to which the family experiences of older people are likely to change over the next 30 years. It argues that as the lifecourse — in terms of both its family and non-family aspects — becomes somewhat less certain and more varied, so too the family relationships within individuals' personal networks are liable to be more diverse and more open to change. It presents a brief cameo from a study of stepfamily kinship, then concludes with a reiteration of the importance of a lifecourse perspective for understanding family life.
