This chapter examines the theories of community in relation to housing with care settings. It argues that, despite a range of social changes, physical place remains important as a venue for social interaction, particularly for older people who tend to spend more time in their local neighbourhood than do other age groups. It explores the continued popularity of extra care housing and retirement villages in the context of older people's aspirations, their experiences of living in societies that are increasingly age focused, and their power as consumers. Lastly, it explores the key question of whether these settings can really function as sustainable communities.
