This chapter examines the theoretical and empirical literature on ‘the person’ and ‘the environment’. It re-evaluates the contribution of Lawton and Nahemow's (1973) Ecological Model of Ageing to environmental gerontological thinking; this focuses on concepts of personal competence and environmental press, and the docility and proactivity hypotheses. It reviews the literature on ‘ageing in place’ and ‘place in ageing’, which draws primarily on the work of Rowles and his concept of ‘insideness’. It concludes with an identification and discussion of shortfalls and gaps in knowledge within the current literature.
