This introductory chapter begins with a brief discussion of the challenges in protecting children and young people from online risks. It then sets out the purpose of the book, which is to offer an up-to-date account of current research, current policy and, especially, the current practices of children and young people as they relate to the internet and online technologies, drawing on lessons of the recent past in order to look ahead to anticipate what is coming. The chapter presents some guiding principles for research or policy on risks in the form of a theoretical framework. It describes a ‘thematic network’ entitled EU Kids Online aimed at identifying the evidence base to inform policies regarding children, young people, and the internet in Europe.
