This chapter focuses on different types of online opportunities taken up by children across Europe. Although the take-up of online opportunities by children across European countries varies in its detail, overall it follows a general pattern, according to which the advancing experience in internet use as children grow older and their changing priorities and motivations lead to a greater variation of online activities. Taking up online opportunities can therefore be seen in terms of a gradation in digital inclusion, in which advancing stages imply increasing user agency, and this is a pattern that applies across countries. Cross-national analysis also shows that the versatility of taking up online opportunities is related to structural aspects such as material resources for using the internet at home.
