This chapter examines some of the common arguments and confusions about the welfare state and globalisation. It begins by making a case for looking broadly at social protection. It then shows how the use of a broader conception of social protection allows one to make a better causal argument on the link between the ‘non-domestic’ and ‘domestic’ causes of changes in the supply and demand of welfare services or transfers. The chapter ends by suggesting that globalisation has surely changed the post-war welfare state.
