This chapter provides an analysis of the evolution of Italian migration policies, focusing mainly on the social protection that is offered to immigrants. It looks at relevant information on the changing nature of Italy, as it transforms from an ‘emigration’ to an ‘immigration’ country. The chapter then shows the development of Italian immigration and immigrant policies before discussing their limited connection to social protection. The 2009 Security Law and the current challenges that migration policy is facing are also discussed. The chapter ends with an attempt to understand the new Italian security-oriented migration-policy model.
