This chapter examines the viability of the choice, personalisation, and empowerment agenda in the delivery of public services across local government in the context of the financial crisis. The publication of the previous Labour government's (2009) public service reform paper Building Britain's Future, and the subsequent Conservative–Liberal Democrat Coalition government's ideas on the ‘Big Society’, promised empowerment of the public consumer, but how viable is this in the recession? The chapter pays attention to different models for the future delivery of services and their implications for the choice, empowerment, and, personalisation agenda. It argues that innovative approaches are likely to be developed only at a local level.
