This chapter summarises the debates in the book and pulls out key themes and ideas, striving for a recovery from the financial crisis in the public sector that is equitable – and not one which rewards vested interests at the expense of more vulnerable sections of society. This book has attempted to provide an overview of the financial crisis that started in Britain in 2008, and has given recent historical context and a detailed account of the global and European implications for the economy. As the debate has moved from private to sovereign debt and the clamour for cuts and ‘efficiency’ savings grows louder, there are suggestions for understanding public service systems from the customer's point of view, rather than through the historical focus on targets and performance indicators.

Keywords: financial crisis; financial recovery; public service delivery; global economy; Britain; private debt; sovereign debt
