This chapter provides an analytical framework that explores the ‘degrees of democracy’ and the diverse and muddled reality that exists between the ideal-typical notions of the rational bureaucratic and the holistic democratic school. In this chapter, data from three different and contrasting schools (democratic school, Steinerian and an inner city Academy) are used to illustrate and illuminate the framework on the degrees of democracy and the elements of holistic democracy.
