Child maltreatment

Show Summary Details

This chapter provides a discussion on child maltreatment. There are no government statistics that show the number of children who have experienced maltreatment. Some trends can now tentatively be identified in relation to maltreatment, and in relation to fatal abuse (from mortality data and homicide statistics), and these are discussed in this chapter. In general, the data suggest grounds for cautious optimism on trends in child deaths, physical abuse and punishment, harsh treatment and perhaps bullying. However, there are many uncertainties in the data.
