This chapter develops a classification of children and young people according to how they use the internet. Based on indicators such as duration of use, range of activities and the kind of preferred online practices, user types are identified by cluster analysis. Further analyses show how these types differ with regard to individual characteristics and how prevalent they are in different countries. Within the context of this book this step provides a basis for the analysis presented in Chapter 25, where user types are described with regard to their experience of risk and harm.
