In this commentary chapter, the author argues that schools make a difference in the lives of young people by expanding or limiting opportunities. While it is noted that poverty and social conditions in the community are central to the opportunities for young people, the author concludes that, by fostering bridging social capital with community agencies, schools can enhance outcomes for young people. The potential of linking social capital to provide opportunities for disadvantaged young people was evident, and the role of schools in enhancing equality of opportunities is affirmed.
