This chapter examines the relevance of social capital for urban regeneration and urban policy. It considers social capital as a multidimensional phenomenon that operates at different levels, and shows how the concept has emerged as a key element of both regeneration and urban policy, allied to agendas of community self-help and social cohesion, and to goals of reducing crime and antisocial behaviour. The chapter also discusses some of the dangers posed by such a strong reliance on social capital in public policy.
