This book aims to challenge the dominant quantitative perspective on young people's transitions and to suggest a more holistic and qualitative approach as an alternative. It also aims to contribute to the development of a dialogue between transition policy and transition research. This chapter discusses the most current concepts and discourses pertaining to youth transitions, such as: active citizenship and participation of young people; the disadvantaged youth; flexibilisation; employability of the labour force; lifelong learning; and equal opportunities. It also stresses the importance of dialogue between the young men and young women who have to be considered as the subjects of their own transitions.

Keywords: work transition; social inclusion; transition policy; equal opportunities; youth transitions
