This chapter examines the relationship between health inequality and places. It describes recent policy developments in England relevant to addressing health inequality, and discusses the relative contributions of health-care and non-health-care interventions. The chapter provides data on the effects of housing and neighbourhoods on health, and introduces the concept of a decent neighbourhood. It explains that geographical differences in health are patterned by processes that sort people between different types of place habitus.
