This chapter discusses the concepts of house and home. It examines the relationship between physical attributes of the house and its use and meaning. It is argued that the concept of quality in housing is a subjective one and hence defies easy definition or measurement. In this chapter, the meaning of home is discussed along with its relationship to factors such as tenure. While much research has been done in this field in recent years, it is argued that research needs to focus more on the differences between households in their conception of home and its links with issues of identity and lifestyle.
