This chapter discusses the future direction of research on housing using the pathways framework. This alternative approach needs a form of research that differs from the traditional positivist approach and highlights particular research methods. Hence, the chapter outlines the general principles of the research methods that are appropriate to a pathways approach and argues for techniques that place the meaning of housing at the forefront of the analysis. This is followed by a discussion of the gaps in the knowledge of housing that the research needs to fill. This discussion draws on the analysis in the previous chapters, which have examined particular pathways. Finally, the chapter discusses research for policy making.
