This chapter discusses how issues around playground safety and fears of litigation have, in large part, undermined the value of playgrounds as a space where children can explore risk and experience ‘adventure’. It illustrates changes over time in attitudes towards the balance between fostering children's development of independence and autonomy and protecting them from harm. The chapter raises questions regarding the meaning of ‘risk’ and ‘safety’ for different groups of stakeholders, and documents growing concern regarding excessive or unnecessary restrictions on children's play activities.
