This chapter explores the relationship between family practices, cultural identity, and cultural reproduction, investigating the symbolic importance of a particular type of ‘traditional’ family for diverse cultural groups and the continuing importance of family as a source of identity which endures over time and is linked to place. It explores these relationships and how they have changed over the past 40 years. It discusses the way class and cultural identities relate to four ethnographic areas and the different patterns of family formation which characterise them.
