This chapter argues that the increase in single-person households is not necessarily an indication of choice and that the relative decrease in households consisting of a heterosexual couple with or without dependent children cannot unproblematically be taken as an indication of increasing individualisation and the decline of the family. The chapter also explores the nature of family and community in contemporary Swansea, in terms of both social networks and social capital, and the extent to which all families are to some extent families of choice.
