This chapter examines the degree to which the delivery of welfare and employment services is being made more personalised. The trends are demonstrated by the two biggest activation programmes in the UK, namely the New Deal for Young People and the New Deal 25 Plus. These two programmes are aimed at unemployed people, or those who are recipients of the Jobseeker's Allowance. The discussion also considers the experiences of recipients of other benefits and places developments in their economic and policy context.
