This chapter examines the Labour government's recent shift towards the building of sustainable communities in England, and assesses the ways in which these new development blueprints define, identify, and tackle questions of security and safety. It analyses the relationships between security policy and urban development in Great Britain and the recent emergence of programmes for building sustainable communities, and explores the links between these new programmes and broader concerns with the security of urban spaces. The chapter argues that through modernised, enhanced processes of governance, new forms of formal and informal policing and mechanisms of social control will help to deliver safe and sustainable neighbourhoods.
