Feminising politics and policy: the impact of New Labour

Show Summary Details

This chapter presents the framework developed in Women and New Labour: Engendering Politics and Policy? to evaluate the process through which a feminisation of politics under New Labour might occur. It reviews the range of opportunities available to a political party to promote women's representation and interests. The framework highlights the series of constraints that can hinder a successful exploitation of these opportunities. The case-study chapters in Part Two of this book examine in detail New Labour's policy stance, activity, and outcomes for women in a range of economic, social, and foreign-policy areas. Part Three addresses the reform policy under New Labour via a series of case studies in economic, social, and international policies. Generally, the chapters look for evidence of feminising politics and policy making in the UK. Finally, an overview of the chapters included in the book is provided.
