This chapter explores the relationship of business and policy making. From a theoretical and empirical perspective, this chapter explores and outlines the mechanisms of business power and influence over policy making. In this discussion, the term business refers to private profit-making institutions or firms and the group of people that manage or own those institutions. The first half of this chapter focuses on theories of business power and influence. It argues that both are variable factors in politics. The second part of the chapter discusses the changing business engagement, power, and influence in British policy making since the 1980s. This period was marked by many policy transformations such as the blurring boundaries between the public and private sectors, changing business-government relations, economic restructuring, and fluctuating economic fortunes. These changes, the chapter concludes, do not make sense unless the role of business over this period is carefully considered.
