This chapter deals with the history of English education policy, a history of the present, and how the institution progressed. It notes that this cursory history of education policy is used as a way of explaining some of the contemporary patterns of the English education system and why the system looks like it does. The chapter draws some parallels between contemporary education-policy issues and those in play at the beginning of education policy in the mid-nineteenth century, and some of the generic themes, continuities, recurrences, patterns, and trends in education policy.
