This chapter focuses on social control. It seeks to identify and specify how community development may be able to make a more substantive contribution to this issue than it does at present. Roland Warren's typology is clear that social control requires community members to observe certain values and it is this that provides the basis for the chapter's argument. The chapter examines the connections between punishment and community and then opens up a broader framework for enabling communities to be more involved in social control. It also presents a Hungarian community development perspective on social control.
