This chapter looks at some of the dilemmas of authority and power that typically face development workers and gives examples of how they have attempted to handle these. It argues that authority can assume different forms — positional, reputational and personal. It focuses in particular on the latter by introducing the concept of self-authorisation that, it argues, is a vital capacity in development work. It examines the roots of this important personal capacity by using examples from people's life histories.
