This chapter examines the different types of humor emerging on the home front North and South during the Civil War. Humor in the North and South differed because conditions in the two regions were very different. From the beginning of the war and over the following four years, privations dominated every aspect of the daily life of everyone in the Confederacy, and while humor did not make that life any easier, it was a way to acknowledge that reality without surrendering to it.
