This chapter deals with a sociohistorical analysis of the formation of Romania's national ideology. National identity as an element in Romanian cultural politics did not come into being with socialism but has a long history, stretching back to at least the mid-1700s. Many of the questions concerning national identity were specialist matters in the literature and the humanities: What sort of novel is the best? Should aesthetic criteria be independent of social concerns or embrace them? How can Romanian cultural products enter international cultural circuits? What is the status of folk culture and how should it be preserved? They had implications, however, which indeed often motivated them for the economy and politics. The writings of the Chroniclers influenced a much more extensive quest into the matter of origins, a quest that again had political aims and produced a major representation of Romanian identity.
