This introductory chapter first sets out the purpose of the book, which is to describe the process of community creation by aged residents in a Japanese setting. The theoretical focus is on the issue of social integration, but this is first and foremost a study of how the elderly Japanese residents approach a type of environment that is new in their culture. The chapter then discusses the message of Japan's aged, selection of the study site, and methodology.
