For the study, the authors visited a total of 105 households in several different regions of Japan for over 150 hours in all, while women between forty-five and fifty-five years old recounted their experiences, beliefs, and concerns about kōnenki. This chapter edits and frames the narratives, artificially separating out the concepts for the sake of clarity in this discussion. It highlights from the outset important differences between the concepts and lived experiences of individuals as they go through the transitions of kōnenki and menopause, respectively.
