This chapter focuses on the civic individuality of institutional “big men” of the Beeri Chettiar community in George Town. The leading men of this community include bankers, cashiers of important British companies, and very wealthy merchants. The chapter suggests that community members see their community as a composite of families and other associations which big men head, and concludes that civic individuality is not only an important expression of who a person is, but the very the structure of George Town.
