This chapter arranges the Badlands sequence into three main stratigraphic sections composited on the basis of numerous shorter sampling transects: the Eden Hot Springs-Jack Rabbit Trail composite section; the Riverside County Landfill-El Casco composite section; and the San Timoteo Canyon-Live Oak Canyon composite section. The chapter also includes a discussion comparing the San Timoteo Badlands succession with faunas of comparable age from elsewhere in the southwestern United States. Southern faunas as well as many others of similar age across the United States are repeatedly noted throughout the text; this is provided as a quick reference and chronological summary. Temporal placement is based on previously published chronostratigrapic frameworks that were based on earlier time scales but accordingly updated.
