This chapter describes the genus Heterorhabdus. It reports that the genus Heterochaeta was established by Claus (1863) to accommodate H. spinifrons and H. papilliger. It notes that as the name Heterochaeta was preoccupied, the genus was renamed Heterorhabdus by Giesbrecht (1898). It specifies that Alloiorhabdus erected by Wolfenden (1911) for Heterorhabdus austrinus Giesbrecht 1902 (the type species by page priority) and a new species, A. medius, are synonymous with Heterorhabdus. It notes that the most important characters shared by all species of this genus are a spiny papilla of the sternite of the first pedigerous somite and a saberlike or falciform spine on the coxa of Mxp. It further notes that Mx1, which has a small endopod bearing three or fewer setae and an elongate exopod, and Mx2, in which the fifth lobe has two large, saberlike or falciform spines are also important for identification of this genus.
