This chapter describes the correct morphology, ultrastructure, and formation of the Palmen body and contact mallet in mature mayflys. The three-dimensional analysis reveals that Palmen bodies appear to lack the inner epicuticle and granular layer which the tracheal cuticle posses. The chapter suggests that Palmen bodies and contact mallets are not innervated and probably have no real function, as evident from body and head tracheal comparisons with Odonata.
