Near the completion of this book, the author discovered via the Internet that Swat, Malakand, and the neighboring tribal districts of northwest Pakistan were again in turmoil. The text reproduced in this chapter is the first message that appeared concerning this fighting. It was posted on two Internet newsgroups—soc.culture.pakistan and soc.culture.afghanistan early in the morning of November 4, 1994. Animosities intensified on the Internet as different posters began to pursue one another on a variety of pretexts. The effect of this style of exchange is very much like a heated face-to-face confrontation in which each party interrupts the other to debate an issue or score a point. One of the most acrimonious exchanges occurred between Ghairat and Ejaz Ahmed.
