This chapter discusses the key areas of debate concerning the sociology and anthropology of culture, art, and music, which include the development of a sociocultural analysis of music, and the sociology of high culture and of cultural institutions. It outlines a framework for critical interpretation of the internal character of musical cultures, the differentiation between them, and how this interpretation informs that analysis of the Institut de Recherche et de Coordination Acoustique/Musique (IRCAM). The chapter suggests some productive links between anthropology, cultural theory, and psychoanalytic theory, and also examines music authorship in relation to musical composition at IRCAM and to computer technologies.
