The author states here that during the seventh grade, he spent more and more time with Jerome. They played video games and tried to invent their own computer programs at the Radio Shack on Broadway. He explains that their friendship became strong enough that Jerome was the first person with whom he ever jointly bought something. He tells of how they spent their lunch money on buying clothes and how he felt about their purchases. He discusses how he got addicted to a video game, Defender, and how he spent most of his money and sold his things just to have money for playing this game. He also notes that he stole from his mother and he cut school and convinced Jerome to do the same.
