This chapter examines the issues of divorce in urban China during the period from 1950 to 1953, particularly in Beijing and Shanghai. It provides fragmentary quantitative and substantial qualitative evidence that point to the possibility that demand, capacity, and actual divorce outcomes were all inversely related to urban status. It proposes the hypothesis that the features that facilitated divorce claims in urban areas actually stemmed from petitioners' rural background.
