This chapter illustrates issues surrounding the process of getting music onto tape, from initial performance to mixdown. There is a wide range of possible approaches to the recording/mixing sequence. How the project proceeds depends on recordists' attitudes toward the process, which are informed by both practical requirements and aesthetic sensibilities. In any case, recording and mixing are dynamically interactive stages. While an idea of the final mix influences decisions during recording, that idea is itself subject to change as it moves toward realization through the recording process. Rough mixes are made along the way that develop, refine, or alter the original plan. This involves selectively muting previously recorded tracks, altering an earlier conception of the arrangement. So the structure of the album's songs and arrangements change many times in the course of recording.
