This chapter examines the role of urban Shanghai in the cultural construction of Chinese modernity. It analyzes two highly successful journals, Dongfang zazhi and Liangyou haubao, and their related commercial enterprises to determine the ways in which imaginary was constructed in Shanghai's urban culture. It explores the production and consumption of print culture in Shanghai from the late Qing era through the 1930s and identifies a mode of urban modernity at the popular level that linked the project of intellectual enlightenment to the rise of a new style of urban life.
