This chapter discusses the ambiguous and troubled nature of modernity in present Turkey, focusing on Būlent Ersoy, a popular conservatory-trained singer who is not well thought of in official circles. It analyzes the sonic and literary representations of Istanbul that many consider to be emblematic of the entire state, and also addresses the importance of nostalgia and the uncoupling of modernity from nationalism in modern Turkey.
