Graziella Zsu discusses how her parents of very different backgrounds were brought together in the last years of World War II. Her mother was Russian, and her father a Chinese professor, who embarked on a journey to Portugal to visit their relatives, but accidentally disembarked in Genoa, Italy. Graziella tells of making her own decisions and how it affected her relationship with her father. She details how she confronted her paternal heritage and the things she learned during that journey. Graziella then studied Chinese full time. Her relationship with her father got better but was short-lived due to her father's death. Graziella and her siblings went back to China to visit their father's relatives. She explains that her encounter with her paternal motherland reshaped her self-perception, that she came to understand herself better, and that all the other bits of her cultural identity fell into place.
