Lily Wu was born in Taiwan but had grown up in the United States from the age of three. She details how she gained the interest to go to China and seek her roots. Lily's parents got divorced, probably, she explains, because they were not very well suited to one another from the very beginning. Lily talks of having had a cold family atmosphere at best, and a hostile one most of the time. She narrates of the unfortunate events that happened to her mother which may have caused her debilitating mental illness. Lily then talks about her experiences and eye-opening discoveries during her trip to China. She also tells of her visits to her relatives in China and the emotions she felt during that time as well, as the realizations she obtained that will last a lifetime.
