This chapter takes a look at the many-sided development of the specialized erotic meaning of black lingerie. It studies the interrelated histories of three different topics, namely: black clothing, racialized sexuality, and sex and death. It notes that black bodies and blackness have long been linked to deviant and even lascivious sexuality. White bodies and whiteness, on the other hand, have been associated with sexual purity. The discussion looks at how the history of black lingerie has been entwined with other cultural phenomena, such as the importance of widows dressing in black in Victorian society and the representations of dead women as beautiful. The chapter is also concerned with consumption and production in terms of the meaning of fashion.
