This chapter examines the portrayal of Antony in the Greek biography Life of Antony. It aims to show that at least part of this biography presented Antony as an active master of disciples and as one how is familiar with philosophical or neo-Pythagorean pedagogues of his age. It compares the depiction of Antony in this biographical work with the impressions of Antony gained from the letters attributed to him. It suggests that the biography provides further evidence that the title teacher or master was considered the most appropriate way of defining the authority and task of leading ascetics.
