This chapter examines Gregory of Nazianzus' funeral oration for Basil of Caesarea. It discusses two questions that dominate any attempt to answer what parts rhetoric and history play in his oration. It analyzes Gregory's reputation and how his text honors Basil. It also considers Gregory's treatment and shaping of information about Basil. It suggest that the important contributions of Gregory's oration to any biography of Basil are the way its style and story presented Basil as a figure to be emulated and the comparison by which it highlights Gregory as the more thorough Christianizer of Hellenism.
