This chapter examines the issue of friendship in Gregory of Nazianzus' funeral oration for Basil of Caesarea. It argues that Gregory was taking a stand in his praise of his special relation with Basil by enshrining it in a discourse dedicated to the saint when he was deceased and thus removed from mortal ties. It suggests that Gregory's attitude toward friendship had roots in his admiration for classical learning.
